Tyshon Fogg Player Profile

I was lucky enough to speak Tyshon Fogg in an interview in order to learn more about him and his experiences. Tyshon Fogg was born in Asbury Park, NJ and lived there until he was 14. Fogg then moved to Baltimore, MD. He started playing football at 8 years old for a pop warner team. He played many different positions throughout his football career including tight end, left tackle, running back, free safety and wide receiver. However, he ended up loving the linebacker position after he started playing linebacker his sophomore/junior year. Coming out of playing at Calvert Hall, Fogg  recorded 49 tackles, a sack and an interception his senior season. That was good enough to make him a 4 star recruit per ESPN and 247sports.

He had many offers from top schools including Clemson, Ohio State, Penn State, Alabama, and Stanford. Ultimately, Tyshon is a family guy, and wanted to stay as close to his family as he could so they could come to his games. Fogg committed his talents to Rutgers, which is back in his birth state of New Jersey. At Rutgers, he recorded 293 tackles, 16 for loss in 49 games with the Scarlet Knights. Outside of football, Tyshon loves to create content, including his new Youtube Channel, where he will be sharing his journey to the 2022 NFL Draft with us.

Tyshon Fogg Strengths

Size/Build

It’s very noticeable when watching the tape on Tyshon that his size is a big plus for him. He has a 6”2, 245 frame which is ideal for a linebacker. He has a very lean yet big build to help him create contact with offensive lineman when getting to the next level. Fogg is able to take on the blocks and shed them. Therefore, he does not get trapped in the blocks. He easily looked like the biggest guy in Rutgers linebacker core.

Footwork

One of the more important factors for any football player is keeping their feet moving. He did a wonderful job with his footwork, always being on the move when reading what the play is. Fogg did this whether it was side to side, back pedaling into pass coverage, or attacking a gap. He makes sure to keep his feet moving and to not plant, which would cause leverage issues.

Zone Coverage

Tyshon did very well in zone coverage when he was asked. This was especially true covering the flat where the running backs he faced often faded to. Rarely did he let them get away from him in flat coverage and was able to contain anyone in that zone. I didn’t get to see much middle of the field zone coverage in his film, but I think he could be effective.

Attitude/Work Ethic

Fogg brings a very positive attitude to his game, and is always looking to improve. He likes being told that he can do better in certain areas of his game, and he will put in the work to get better in any area. This is an attribute that will serve him very well at the next level. He knows what he needs to do to get better, and what areas need the most work. This is why he is currently training everyday until his pro day.

Tyshon Fogg Weaknesses

Tackling

On occasion, Tyshon did arm tackle some of the fast Big Ten running backs, which led to some missed tackles that could have been stops at the line of scrimmage. This is a very basic fix that many defensive players work on constantly, even in the NFL. It’s more instinct to arm tackle as a defensive player rather than wrap up.

Overcommitting Gaps

The name of the game for a linebacker is to stuff holes and make the tackles in the gaps. On occasion, Tyshon would overcommit himself in a hole that a run play was going to. This made it an easier block for the lineman in the gap. This will take reps to fix, but is easily coachable.  With his work ethic I expect that he will be able to correct it.

Man Coverage

A majority of the time, a linebacker will be matched up with a running back in coverage. Most of the time when Fogg was in man coverage he was on a running back. Rutgers liked to run man coverage quite a bit. Tyshon is the first person to say that he wants to work on his man coverage skills, which is exactly what he is doing. Out in the open field, he does need to be careful with contact with his man. He also needs to improve playing the ball, and making sure he knows where the ball is when it is thrown his way. He needs to turn his head to look for the ball, because he is right there with his man every time. I have no doubt this will be improved with his time training.

Tyshon Fogg Draft Stock

Through my research on draft stock, there isn’t a lot of information on where Tyshon is projected to be drafted outside of Lines.com. They have him projected to be an undrafted rookie. However, knowing his personality as a player, his work ethic, and with a strong pro day, I can see his name being called on day 3. Any franchise that drafts him or picks him up will strike gold if they help coach and develop him. I have no worries about Tyshon doing his part to do better and improve his projected draft spot. After his pro day, I believe more teams will take a look at him.

Final Thoughts on Tyshon Fogg Scouting Report

Tyshon was wonderful to speak to, and seems like a well oriented young man with a superb positive attitude and excellent work ethic. He’s got the tangibles that NFL teams can work with and help him grow into a very good football player at the next level. No player is perfect, and every player knows that they need to grind to make their game better. I believe Tyshon is one of those guys that will work hard for a franchise. He has the size and build that you want in a linebacker. Fogg loves to hit and create contact at the line of scrimmage. I believe that he can be drafted on day 3, if not he will have a shot to show teams what he has to offer as an UDFA. Fogg is a sleeper for now, but I expect him to move up draft boards.

NFL Comparison

When comparing Tyshon’s play to current or past NFL talent, he reminded me of former Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Preston Brown who last played in 2019. I believe Brown is faster than Tyshon, but has the same kind of play style.
