Tyree Wilson Draft Profile

Wilson is a former 4-star recruit from West Rusk High School in New London, Texas. According to 247sports, he was the 32nd-best player in the state. Some players he was ranked behind included DeMarvion Overshown, Caden Sterns, and Jaylen Waddle. They also had him ranked as the 16th-best weakside defensive end in the nation. While achieving this status, he received 23 division I offers. But after visiting Arkansas and Texas A&M, he decided to play for the Aggies. After only playing one season for the Aggies, he decided to enter the transfer portal and join the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Here is how he did in his last three collegiate seasons.

2020: 10 tackles and 1.5 sacks

2021: 37 tackles, 7 sacks, and 1 PBU

2022: 61 tackles, 7 sacks, 1 fumble, and 1 fumble recovery

Tyree Wilson Strengths

Power

The strongest part of Wilson’s game is his ability to use his power to make plays. When rushing the passer, he does a good job of using his lower body strength to drive blockers back. By doing so, he forces the pocket to collapse and the QB to either get rid of the ball or leave the pocket.

Wilson also uses his power to disrupt the run at the line of scrimmage. At the point of attack, he can easily hold his ground and clog lanes for the ball carrier. There were even a few snaps where he held his own against double teams. If the ball carrier does come his way, he uses his upper body strength to disengage and make the play. When delivering a hit on the ball carrier, he makes sure to hit them hard enough that it is impossible for them to stay on their feet.

Hand Usage

At the point of attack, Wilson does a good job of using his hands to gain leverage. When bull rushing, he places each hand on the opposing blocker’s pectorals. This allows him to force them back into the pocket and apply pressure on the QB. He does a good job of fighting off blockers’ hands when running the arc. This allows him to keep leverage throughout his rush. Then, when he gets close to the QB, he uses his strong upper body to disengage and make a play.

Stopping the Run

Although Wilson has shown to be productive as a pass rusher, I was more impressed with his ability to stop the run. As I mentioned earlier, he does a good job of holding his ground at the line of scrimmage. This allows him to clog lanes and force the ball carrier to get creative. If they continue to come his way, he can use his long arms to reach out and get a hand on them.

Tyree Wilson Weaknesses

Get Off

For a player that many people consider to be a top talent in the draft this year, he is very slow off the line. When lined up in a 2-point stance, he lacks the acceleration needed to beat blockers on the outside. This often forces him to work back toward the inside which leads him to be predictable with what his next move is. When lined up in a 3-point stance, he often stands up too quickly off the snap. This takes away his momentum and power which are needed to win matchups in the phone booth.

Pad Level

As I briefly mentioned above, Wilson has a tendency to play with his pad level too high. At the point of attack, this takes away a lot of his power which can lead to him getting neutralized. This often occurs when he is bull-rushing tackles. His high pad level also hinders his ability to move through traffic and make a play on the ball carrier.

Tyree Wilson Draft Stock

As of today, nflmockdraftdatabase has Wilson as the 7th best prospect in the draft. Although I usually agree with their rankings, I’m afraid I have to disagree with this one. Based on the film I watched, I don’t understand how he is ranked in the top 20 draft prospects. That is why I have him going later in my 2023 Post Combine NFL Mock Draft. If I were an NFL GM, the highest I would consider taking him is in the backend of the first round.

Final Thoughts on Tyree Wilson Scouting Report

Tyree Wilson is one of the most physically gifted prospects in the 2023 NFL Draft. But, I still think he has a lot of room for development before he can be seen as a regular starter. Wilson is very powerful and knows how to use his size and power to win matchups. When engaged in contact, Wilson shows a good understanding of where to place his hands when rushing. This allows him to gain leverage at the point of attack and make plays in the backfield. By using these two skills, Wilson has proven to be an effective run-stopper.

In order for him to be valued in the top 25, in my opinion, he needs to work on his speed and agility. This would allow him to explode off the snap and be less predictable because he can beat blockers in a variety of ways. He also needs to work on keeping his pad level low and using his power to its full extent
