DeMarvion Overshown Draft Profile

DeMarvion went to Arp High School in Arp, Texas. 247 sports listed him as a 4 star️ prospect and the 6th best safety in his class of 2018. He was the 52nd best prospect in the country overall, and the 5th best in the state of Texas. Although he had offers from Ohio State, Georgia, Clemson, Texas A&M, Stanford, Alabama, LSU, Oklahoma, Florida and many more, he decided to stay home. He committed to the University of Texas May 31, 2017.

As a freshman, Overshown struggled, and only played 1 snap. He then transitioned from safety to linebacker. 2020 was his first year at linebacker. DeMarvion adjusted very quickly and combined for 60 total tackles (32 solo). He also had an impressive 8 tackles for a loss with a sack to go along with it. His ball skills were on display helping him snag two interceptions. Overshown also had one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries.

In 2021, the 4 year senior had 74 total tackles (38 solo) 5.5 tackles for loss and 2 more sacks. He tallied two more forced fumbles on the way to an amazing campaign. In his last year of eligibility, Overshown kept on improving. The 5th year season made it look easy totaling 96 combined tackles (49 solo), 10 tackles for a loss and 4 sacks. He also had 5 passes defended. His best game came against Baylor, when he had 14 combined tackles and a sack. This helped his team beat the Baylor Bears.

Strengths

Versatile

Converting to any position is more difficult than some think. Going from safety to linebacker can be dicey. Obviously, it comes with much more physicality. Every play you are being hit or hitting the opposing team. You can get away with not being a great tackler at safety as long as you have elite ball skills. However, not being able to hold your own in that department at linebacker will have you sitting on the bench more than playing on the field. Overshown has showed that he can make that difficult move to a different defensive position.

Explosiveness

Being 6’4 and 224 pounds gives Overshown an advantage when combined with his closing speed. He also has heavy, sticky hands to shake off blockers and make the play. Overshown fills his assignment very well when hitting the hole. His inside presence when blitzing the A gap is superior. By the time he hit his 5th year, opposing guards had no chance blocking this kid. The best way to describe his play is violent.

Polished Product

Not only can he blitz on the inside, he also has shown to be aggressive on the edge. When he’s not blitzing, he shows promise in coverage. When on the second level he lurks in space and has the ball skills and hands to make the interception. Just look at his 2020 interception against Oklahoma’s Spencer Rattler. He starts the play on the edge. The ball is snapped and he drops back to zone coverage. He quickly acknowledges the route, glides to his right tricking the qb to then throw the crossing route. When the ball is thrown, his quickness allows him to easily catch up and picks the ball for the easy interception. This is NFL pro type stuff. The real deal.

High Motor

Go ahead and throw on the film and count how many times DeMarvion takes a play off. You won’t count many. Every play he gives it 100 percent and is a joy to watch.

Big hitter

DeMarvion’s film reminds me of playing Madden back in 2005. That was the year Ray Lewis was on the cover. Of course, he’s one of the best linebackers to ever play the game. The best and newest feature, and something Overshown can create in real life, was the hit stick. Overshown plays mean and brings the thunder.

DeMarvion Overshown NFL Draft Stock

According to nflmockdraftdatabase, Overshown projects to be a 3rd to 4th round draft pick. In my opinion, this seems to be pretty on target. He will be playing in the Senior Bowl and obviously will be showing off his talents at the NFL Combine. I have a strong feeling that if he shows out like he is fully capable of, his draft stock could rise. GM’s lust over athletes like this. He has all the intangibles you look for and his film confirms it.

Final Thoughts on DeMarvion Overshown Scouting Report

As I mentioned, this kid plays violent and mean. In a league where off ball linebackers aren’t as coveted as they once were, I think he can be the outlier. His versatility allows him to lineup in so many positions and his explosive speed and strength can definitely be used with a creative defensive coordinator. All in all , I have to say watching DeMarvion’s film had to be my favorite experience in scouting prospects so far in 2023.

DeMarvion Overshown Player Comparison

I can easily compare DeMarvion to Isaiah Simmons since both players transitioned from defensive back to linebacker. Both are 6’4 and freakish athletes. Both can blitz the passer or drop back and hold their own in coverage. Overshown isn’t quite as polished as Isaiah was when he declared for the draft, but it’s pretty damn close.
