“I like to finish blocks, play until the whistle, hit the other team in the mouth,”

Introduction

Trey Pipkins is an offensive lineman from Sioux Falls University, a real small school prospect. He measured in at 6’6”, 309 pounds. He has 33 and 7/8 inch arms and 9 and 5/8 inch hands. Pipkins ran the 40 yard dash in 5.12 seconds. Then he ran the 3 cone in 7.61 and the shuttle in 4.7 seconds. He put up 16 reps on the bench press. Pipkins is a three year starter, and appeared in ten games as a redshirt freshman.

Positives

Pipkins has great height for an NFL offensive tackle, though he could bulk up a bit. He has good but not great arm length. He is quick, with good foot speed and agility. Pipkins was one of only five Division II players to get invited to the Combine, so he’s got skills. Watching tape on Pipkins, he deals with inside and outside rushes well. He’s also nasty, Pipkins plays through the whistle and finishes blocks.

I spoke to Pipkins about his nastiness, as it was as evident on film as any player that I spoke to. He talked about how he felt he was nasty and that he looked to finish blocks on any and every play.

Negatives

Trey can improve on his hand placement on blocks, sometimes he hits a guy but only glances him. The other obvious concern, is that he played Division II football, while good players come out of these schools, he didn’t face NFL talent week in and week out. Finally, I would like to see his feet further apart, his stance is a little too narrow, he needs to widen his stance to be more consistent. His bench numbers are also troubling, but on film he looked fine.

Prediction

Pipkins is a small school diamond in the draft. You don’t make it to the combine out of Division II unless you’re very talented. Pipkins showed great athleticism and agility that you want to see out of an NFL tackle position. I wish he was a little heavier and his arms were an inch longer, but if they were he probably would have ended up at a much bigger school. Pipkins has the tools to be successful and he showed great potential at a smaller school. When I spoke to him, he mentioned offers to transfer, but he was loyal to the team who had offered him a scholarship early.

I’d like to see him put up better numbers in the bench, but there have been plenty of great offensive lineman who haven’t performed well in the bench, foot speed is much more important for tackles. Pipkins will probably be picked in the early to mid 3rd day, I’m guessing in the 4th to 5th round. I like him about a round earlier, I’d take him in the 3rd to 4th round.

Draft Day Grade: 3rd to 4th round.

Likely Landing Spots: There was something about the way Pipkins spoke about his meeting with Minnesota, I think he ends up a Vikings.

Next big man up is Donnell Greene.
