OL Alex Bars during the 2019 NFL Scouting Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Introduction

Alex Bars is an offensive lineman from Notre Dame. He measured in at 6’6”, 312 pounds, with 32 and 3/4 inch arms and 9 and 3/8 inch hands. Bars did not participate in combine drills, as he is recovering from a knee injury.

Strengths

One of Bars’ great strengths is his versatility. He played both guard positions, tackle and center. Bars was also coached on the offensive line by Harry Hiestand. He is the former Notre Dame and current Chicago Bears offensive line coach. Bars said that Hiestand meant everything to his career and taught him versatility and important techniques that are used in the NFL.

I though Bars looked pretty quick before the injury. I like his agility and foot movement for the next level. He is also a smart player who recognizes blitzes well. Bars talked about his film study quite a bit, it seemed very important to him. When asked about nastiness, Bars said it meant finishing every play, and it’s how he feels that every offensive lineman should play.

Weakness

Alex Bars’ biggest issue is recovering from his season ending knee injury. Bars told me his knee is doing well, and he has had zero setbacks. He said that he had 200 guys poking and prodding at his leg during the Combine and that he welcomed the examination. Bars also needs to widen his stance when he blocks, he keeps his feet too narrow.

Prediction

Alex Bars is a late round/undrafted projected pick. However, I like him a lot more than anyone else seems to. Bars has some real versatility, starting at three positions at Notre Dame. His biggest issue is his narrow stance, but that seems easily fixable. Bars is a student of the game, he is very comfortable studying film and plays smart. I think Bars is a future starter in the league, which is pretty bold for a guy who might go undrafted. I’m willing to go out on a limb for him.
