Miami Dolphins Draft Grades

How did the Dolphins do in the 2021 NFL Draft? We assign the Miami Dolphins draft grades for every pick they made.

Round 1 (No.6 Overall) WR, Jaylen Waddle

The Dolphins surprise no one and take a wide receiver with their first pick. I hear some grumblings among Dolphin fans that they didn’t want Waddle. However, I doubt that will last long once they see the electricity the Alabama receiver will provide the offense. I actually like the pick of Waddle to Miami the most of the big three, due to the fact he is a much different receiver than what they already have. I love the idea of him being the home run hitter, while Parker can be the “X.” Grade A

Round 1 (No.18 Overall) EDGE, Jaelan Phillips

I wasn’t sure where Miami would go with their second first rounder. They chose the former number one high school recruit out of Miami. Phillips has a history of injuries and concussions already, and I really question his longevity. Taking him in the second or third I’m okay with, but I don’t want question marks around my top 20 pick. Jaelan does have ability and may become a great playmaker for the Dolphins, but I would have liked a safer option here. Grade B-

Round 2 (No.36 Overall) S, Jevon Holland Oregon

Miami needed a safety, and the Oregon product was a solid pick. Many liked Moehrig as the top safety, but one year ago they had Holland there instead. Holland will bring a play making presence to the back end, and bolster an already solid secondary. I believe he will fit the system nicely and contribute day 1. Third starter in three picks! Grade A-

Round 2 (No. 42 Overall) OT, Liam Eichenberg

Many wonder if the Notre Dame tackle will need to swing inside to guard in the NFL, but I think the Dolphins have built a young versatile o line and it wont matter. He too should start early, giving the Dolphins a solid start to the 2021 NFL Draft. Plus I love lineman, and think teams need to emphasize a good o line more and more. Grade B+

Round 3 (No.81 Overall) TE, Hunter Long

This is my favorite in line tight end in this draft class. He will give the Miami coaching staff the ability to move Mike Gesicki around, and still have a receiver in Long. He also is a more than capable blocker, not to mention if they don’t want to pay Gesicki soon, they will already have a starting caliber tight end on the roster. Grade B

Round 7 (No. 231 Overall) OT, Larnel Coleman

Slightly surprised to see the Dolphins double dip at tackle, when the center position is more of a need, but in the seventh round I guess it’s not too big a risk. Coleman is a mountain of a man, who may be able to stay in the NFL as a developmental RT. He impressed at his pro day, and has Stretch Armstrong like reach. To get a player of his pedigree as a developmental player this late is a win. Grade B+

Round 7 (No.244 Overall) RB, Gerrid Doaks

Dolphins finally get their running back! I know they had their hearts set on a bigger name back, but at least they got a big back. He tips the scales at 230 lbs. Doaks is coming off of his most productive year ever at Cincinnati, and offers ability between the tackles and as a receiver. He should challenge for a role in the not so stellar Miami backfield. I have no clue how they didn’t like the upside of Kylin Hill here!! Grade D+
