Houston Texans Draft Grades

How did the Texans do in the 2021 NFL Draft? We assign the Houston Texans draft grades for every pick they made.

Round 3 (No.67 Overall) QB, Davis Mills

Mills was the top pro style quarterback prospect out of high school, but he never really developed like people thought he would. If anyone can get it out of him it’s Pep Hamilton. There were better options available for Houston here, but they decided to shore up the quarterback position with so many questions surrounding the future of Deshaun Watson. Grade C-

Round 3 (No. 89 Overall) WR, Nico Collins

Once again, Collins wouldn’t have been the pick here for me. I had wide receivers I would have taken over Collins as well. The new GM Nick Caserio is building a team he thinks can compete, so we will give him time. That being said, the big bodied receiver from Michigan will give who ever is throwing the ball a large target and be a red zone threat. Maybe they see him as Will Fuller 2.0? Grade C+

Round 5 (No.147 Overall) TE, Brevin Jordan

One of my favorite players on tape, so I don’t hate it, but I’m questioning who the Texans plan on sending out there on defense this season. They used their first three picks on offense. Jordan is more of a receiver than an in line tight end. I don’t expect him to ever be known for his blocking like a George Kittle, but he can be versatile.  His position is more of an “H” back, reminiscent of a Chris Cooley. I love the player, but thought they had bigger needs.   Grade C

Round 5 (No.170 Overall) LB, Garret Wallow

The home state linebacker from TCU was the first defense player drafted by the Texans. I ask you, other than Cunningham, can you even name a linebacker for Houston? At least they finally added a position of need. Wallow has potential to develop, but is slightly undersized weighing in at only 220 pounds at his pro day. I’m left wondering if they shouldn’t have taken Britt or McGrone, who both went later in the round. Grade B-

Round 6 (No.195 Overall) DT, Roy Lopez

With their final pick, the Texans selected more defense by taking the defensive tackle out of Arizona. Even this late, I had tackles I would have preferred over Lopez, no matter what alignment they plan to play him at. We didn’t even have Lopez as a draft worthy player, so to say reach is a bit of an understatement.      Grade D
