Charleston Rambo Player Profile

Charleston Rambo is a former four-star recruit out of Cedar Hill High School in Cedar Hill, Texas. According to 247sports, coming out of high school in 2017 he was ranked as the 27th best wide receiver in the nation. Don’t let that number fool you, he was a top 30 wide receiver in a class that included players like Jerry Jeudy, Tee Higgins, Donovan People-Jones, DeVonta Smith and many more NFL talents. This ranking allowed him to get recognized by 32 division I schools, many of which were power five talents. After looking at his stats, I am not surprised that he was such a highly ranked prospect. According to MaxPreps, during his senior year he had 87 total receptions for 1,590 yards and 25 touchdowns. These are numbers I would love to see from a wide receiver at any level. When getting as many offers as he did, it can be hard to pick a school. This did not seem to be the case for Rambo, he decided to join CeeDee Lamb at Oklahoma. This was a good decision, because he would eventually have a Heisman winner throwing the ball to him.

After a few successful years for the Sooners, Rambo decided to take his talents elsewhere for the 2021 season. Rambo entered the transfer portal and decided to play for the Hurricanes in Miami. So far this season, Rambo has yet to disappoint. He currently has a total of 64 receptions for 955 yards and 5 touchdowns. This kind of efficiency has caused him to rise up many draft boards this season (including mine).

Charleston Rambo Strengths

Deep Threat

Rambo has been a fantastic deep threat for the Hurricanes all season. Whenever he is on the field, he is either used as the primary target or as bait to open up the field. The defense is forced to respect Rambo’s big play ability. Rambo has fantastic athleticism which allows him to punish whatever defense he faces. In the game against Georgia Tech, Rambo had a total of 7 receptions for 210 yards and a touchdown. When watching the film in this game, Rambo primarily ran routes deep down the field. This will translate well to the NFL because if he is covered, someone else will be open.

Route Running

Part of the reason Oklahoma had such a dangerous offense in 2018 and 2019 was due to the deadly route running duo of Rambo and Lamb. Their abilities to make a play on the ball and keep the defense on their toes was incredible. CeeDee Lamb is continuing to show this ability into his NFL career and I expect to see Rambo do this as well. Not only is Rambo a great deep route runner, he is also effective in short slant routes as well. This has been evident throughout his time at Oklahoma, as well as his time at Miami. During this season, I have seen more versatility than I have seen from him in the past. This will help him rise up draft boards because he is no longer a one trick pony.

Quick Feet

As I noted earlier, Rambo is a great route runner and I think he can attribute a lot of that success to his quick feet. Although he is primarily a deep threat, he is fantastic at shaking defenders. He can do this by either breaking their ankles shortly after the snap, or by changing directions in the middle of his route. This is a skill that you need to be able to have in order to make it at the next level. Avoiding contact with a cornerback is a key skill in the NFL.

Ball Skills

Miami WR Charleston Rambo

Rambo is a veteran receiver on the Hurricanes’ offense and it shows. He does a very good job of finding the weaknesses in the defense. This makes the quarterback’s job very easy, because Rambo is almost always open and can make a play on the ball. Not only is he good at making plays on the ball when he is open, he is also good at catching the ball when contested as well. Being able to make a play when covered tightly is what makes him a great talent. Although he may not be one of the best receivers in this class, I think he makes a fantastic complimentary piece to an already developed offense.

Charleston Rambo Weaknesses

Naturally Uses Body to Make Catches

Rambo has a tendency to use his torso when making catches in stride. This does not mean that he does not have good hands, that is far from the case. When Rambo uses only his hands to make a play he is just as deadly. This is a red flag for NFL scouts, because using your body to make a catch can slow you down. Not only that, but it also limits his ability to go up and highpoint the ball.

Frame

For being 6’1”, Rambo is too light for someone his size. Usually we see receivers of his height weighing around 200 lbs. His small and nimble frame allows him to shed tackles, but limits his ability to power through tackles. I love wide receivers who are able to extend plays after contact. This is where Rambo’s biggest weakness lies, once the defender makes contact with him, the play is usually over. With all of this being said, this is something that can change once he gets drafted. If he puts in the time in the gym and develops an NFL ready body, he will thrive.

Charleston Rambo Draft Stock

Rambo’s draft stock has been fluctuating all season. As of right now, I think that Rambo will be taken in the latter half of the sixth round or even seventh round.  If he continues to play at the same level, I think he could make his way up towards the early fifth or sixth round. This could be the case, because he shows good potential to be a complimentary piece in an offense. If I was the GM of the Saints, I would pull the trigger on Rambo in the sixth round if he is available. By drafting him, he is not only giving your offense a good deep threat; he is also able to open up the field for Michael Thomas.

Charleston Rambo Final Thoughts

Although I think that Rambo is a day three talent in this draft, he has a lot of upside if he develops his skills properly. As I noted earlier, he needs to go to a team that has an offense with at least one developed wide receiver. Once he has been in the league for a few years, he will hopefully move up the depth chart and become an every down receiver.

Charleston Rambo NFL Player Comparison

When watching his film, he reminded me of a player that is a solid vertical threat in the NFL. This player is Marquez Valdes-Scantling. Although Rambo is significantly smaller than Valdes-Scantling, their ability to help space out the field by being an effective vertical threat is very similar. The advantage Rambo has over Valdes-Scantling is his speed and quick feet.
