“Jacksonville Trades first pick”. What happens if Jacksonville does the unthinkable and passes on the best QB prospect since Andrew Luck? What would their team look like?

By Ken Noble

I know, I know! No way, what’s wrong with you? You’re crazy, and Lawrence is can’t miss are all things you are thinking, but just hear me out. What is the value of the pick that would land a team the best prospect since Andrew Luck and John Elway before him? One would think you could get a king’s ransom as they say. In April of 2017 the Bears traded up just one spot for Mitchell Trubisky and they gave up picks number 3,67 and 111 that year plus a third the following season. Now I ask, is Trubisky as hyped as Trevor Lawrence? Of course not, so what if they could land some major capital to build a roster?

Current Roster

I’m a firm believer of building a team that can support a young QB so you don’t waste an amazing talent due to his lack of support, ie, David Carr of the Houston Texans or Sam Darnold in NY. Build up a solid supporting cast, then insert the QB to complete the roster. Also, how many QBs drafted first overall have turned out to be the player they were supposed to be the last 20 years?

Imagine if you will, Urban Meyer and Trent Baalke called up the Jets and moved back just one spot for the Jets first rounder as well as both the firsts the Jets received in the Jamal Adams trade. Well at number two do you take the next best QB? Not in this scenario! Why not pretend we are in the movies and call the Falcons or Panthers and trade back again and add yet another first in 2022 and another 3rd this year?

The Jags would then hold 3 firsts this draft and an additional 3 firsts in the next draft. They could use these to potentially choose one of the top QBs in next year’s class. Would you rather have Lawrence without the talent around him to succeed, or have a Slovis or Howell with 5 other first rounders around him? In this hypothetical we keep the pieces the Jags have like Henderson, Griffin, Jack, Allen and Chaisson on defense as well as Chark, Shenault, Robinson and some solid offensive lineman. Then we add someone like say Kyle Pitts at pick 8 and players like Barmore and Moehrig in the 20’s. Next season you add Slovis, Howell, Shough or whomever you like best plus 2 more first rounders. Let’s say they add another pass rusher and maybe the best LT available.

Hypothetical Roster

Obviously it doesn’t have to be those exact players, but think of the possibilities and what the young Jaguars team would look like. I know I’d jump on that bandwagon real quick and so would many many others. So Urban, Trent this is just a little food for thought, go ahead and chew on it!

Jacksonville trades 1st Round Pick. Jacksonville passes on Trevor Lawrence. How many starters is Trevor Lawrence worth?
Jacksonville could end up with a similar draft to this, landing multiple starters and three first round picks in 2022. All they have to do is give up Trevor Lawrence.
