Drew Lock NFL Draft Prospect Report

Number 5 on our list is a projected first round pick, maybe a top ten pick. I think he’s good, but there’s four quarterbacks I would rather have. Number 5 is Drew Lock from Missouri.

Introduction

Drew Lock is a 6’4” 228 pound quarterback from Mizzou, prototype size. He’s from Lee Summit, Missouri right down the road from where I lived for awhile. He ran the 40 yard dash in 4.69 seconds. Lock did the 3 cone drill in 7.03 seconds and the 20 yard shuttle in 4.12 seconds.

Positives

Lock looks like a quarterback, as mentioned he’s got that NFL size. He also has a rocket arm. His arm strength is great, not quite the best in the class, but close. He had a huge year in 2017 throwing for 3,964 yards, 44 touchdowns against 13 interceptions. He is a three year starter and started eight games as a freshman, so you have to like that he’s experienced as well. Lock reads defenses pretty well and has good mechanics and a very quick release. He is a good athlete and ran for six touchdowns his senior year.

Negatives

A worry about Lock is his accuracy. He only broke my important 60 percent completion percentage his senior year with 62.9, which is a good number. He did have numerous dropped passes in his junior and senior year, so his numbers should be a bit better. I also was able to see his accuracy issues in watching film. He misses receivers that he should hit and he doesn’t lead receivers as well as he should. His touch can also be an issue. He relies on his cannon arm, but sometimes you need to take a little off and put some air under the ball on shorter throws.

Lock’s accuracy also suffers a lot when he’s on the move. He needs to square up on those throws. Lock also did not play well against top level competition, the level that he will be playing every week in the NFL.

Prediction

Lock has the tools and the look to be a quality NFL starting quarterback. I understand why people look at him and watch him throw and think he can be great. I think he would be best suited to sit a year, learn and clean up some of his bad habits. With that time and some good coaching, Lock can reach his potential which is high.

Draft Dive Grade: Late 1st round/Early 2nd round

Likely Landing Spots: A team that’s looking for a starter quickly, though he would be best suited to sit a year behind a veteran. Denver Broncos, Washington Redskins, LA Chargers and New England Patriots are four teams that are set this year but need to look to the future. Who’s up next?
