Indiana was the darlings of the B1G last season. Now, they are an afterthought. Why? Iowa beat them 34-6, and they still haven’t recovered. Michael Penix Jr. looked great in 2020, but Iowa picked him off three times. Mercifully, he got benched before Iowa could do more damage.

Week 2 – #9 Iowa State

After that domination, they had no choice but to move Iowa into the top 10. Still, they were ranked lower than their in-state rival, who barely squeaked by middling FCS squad Northern Iowa. I’m used to this disrespect, but it doesn’t mean I have to like it. Neither did the Hawkeyes. They took buzzworthy quarterback Brock Purdy, a man that some saw as a first rounder at one point, and picked him off three times. Mercifully, he got benched before Iowa could do more damage.

Week 3 – Kent State

Yes, those Kent State Golden Flashes. The ones that averaged over 40 points per game in 2020. They put up 7 against Iowa. Mercifully, Kent State made the decision to run out the clock with four minutes left in the game.

Week 4 – Colorado State

Not that impressive of a victory. Similar to beating Clemson.

Week 5 – Maryland

Iowa had to go to take on an undefeated Maryland team on Friday night. Taulia Tagovailoa was seen as possibly the best quarterback in college football through four games. Iowa won 51-14. I think this tweet best sums up the Iowa defensive performance.

Mercifully, Taulia Tagovailoa was benched. His backup added an interception.

Week 6 – #4 Penn State

Yes, this is Iowa’s third top-25 opponent, second in the top-10. Ain’t no thang. Sure, Iowa trailed 17-3 at one point. Unmercifully, Sean Clifford was injured after throwing two interceptions (Sorry Penn State fans, it wasn’t going to make a difference). Penn State’s backup added two more interceptions. Iowa surgically cut down Penn State’s lead until they took a 23-20 lead with six minutes left. Penn State never threatened again. In fact, Iowa was so confident in their defense that this happened.

Iowa really did this. Instead of trying to run for a first down, they just lined up in victory formation and kneeled. They punted with 42 seconds left. That’s a lot of time in college football. Penn State gained three yards, threw three incompletions, and Iowa downed it one more time for the victory.

Yet, somehow, the Iowa Hawkeyes have only risen to number two in the nation. Meanwhile, Georgia has beaten one team currently in the top 25 by taking out #17 Arkansas. Have they been impressive? Definitely, but it’d be hard to not look impressive against the likes of Vanderbilt and UAB, a team that just had their football program reinstated five years ago.

Iowa has had a far superior schedule, is leading the nation in turnovers and turnover margin, and if that’s not enough, just look at Iowa’s #1 weapon.

That somehow wasn’t even his best punt of the game.

Why Won’t the NCAA Rank Iowa #1

The Iowa Hawkeyes are off to a 6-0 start and like every great Iowa team before them, they are being disrespected by fans and media alike. Iowa started at #18 this season, despite winning their last 8 games last season. Yes, I said 8, because I’m counting the forfeits from Michigan and Missouri, two schools too cowardly to actually face the Hawkeyes on the year. Somehow, they have only risen to #2 in the rankings, despite CLEARLY being the best team in the nation so far this season. I mean, just look at this resume of wins.

Week 1 – #17 Indiana
