Tylan Morton Draft Profile

Morton is a former unranked dual-threat quarterback from Griffin High School in Griffin, Georgia. In high school, Morton was a two-sport athlete where he played football and basketball. Although he was solid in both sports, he decided that he wanted to play football at a collegiate level. Unfortunately, he did not receive a single scholarship according to 247sports. So, Morton decided to take his talents to Hinds Community College where he would have an amazing career. In two seasons at Hinds, he recorded over 3,000 total yards. Additionally, in his sophomore season, he completed 119 passes for 1,568 yards and 12 touchdowns. This was enough to make him the 2nd best dual-threat QB in the JUCO transfer portal.

In the portal, he received offers from 4 Division I programs. These schools were Alcorn State, Florida A&M, Western Kentucky, and South Alabama. After initially committing to WKU, he changed his mind and decided to go to Mobile, Alabama and play for the Jaguars. In his first season with the Jaguars, he completed 10 passes in 4 games for 186 yards. After these disappointing results, Morton did not play at all during the 2020 and 2021 seasons. After entering his name in the 2021 transfer portal, Morton was shortly picked up by Southwestern Oklahoma State where he would finish his collegiate career with his best season yet. This season, he threw for 2,709 yards and 21 touchdowns while rushing for 443 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Tylan Morton Strengths

Athleticism

Morton is incredibly light on his feet for his size. When outside of the pocket, Morton shows incredible quickness to make plays on his feet and move the chains. He is also able to use his quickness to get out of the pocket when it is collapsing. Once he gets past the line of scrimmage, he displays some solid agility to make defenders miss in open field. If a defender is able to deliver a hit on him, he does a good job of staying on his feet due to his above-average balance. His overall athleticism really keeps defenses on their heels because he is able to punish defenses in and out of the pocket.

Accuracy

When I first turned on Morton’s film, the first attribute that stood out to me was his ability to deliver accurate passes anywhere on the field. In most of the games I watched, a lot of the passing plays were bubble screens and short routes. In those plays, Morton showed that he is able to deliver an accurate ball immediately after the snap. Not only are these throws on target, but they are usually in a position that allows the receiver to maximize the number of yards gained.

Additionally, Morton has good accuracy when making off-balance throws. Although his offensive line did a solid job throughout the season of giving him time in the pocket, there were several times when Morton had to make something happen on the move. If he was not able to take off down the field on his own, he showed off his ability to deliver an accurate ball for a short-intermediate gain. He is also good at completing passes anywhere on the field with weight on his back foot. The only major concern that I have about his accuracy is his consistency, but I will touch on that a little later.

Poise

Out of the countless snaps that I watched of Morton’s film, I rarely saw him crumble when he was under pressure. On passing plays, he shows that he is not scared to get hit as long as he gets the pass off. This is a quality you want from your QB at the professional level because it shows that he puts the team and wins first over him. Additionally, when the pocket is collapsing, he does a good job of keeping his eyes downfield and relying on his instincts to escape from pressure.

Mental Toughness

Although Morton may not be the most consistent QB, he has the ability to play to the level of his competition. This is a big reason why I think he has a future in professional football because if he needs to step up and carry his team to a comeback, he can do so. Additionally, he consistently makes the right decisions and rarely forces throws through tight windows.

Mechanics

As I mentioned earlier, Morton is a gifted athlete. When watching him throw the ball, I was impressed with his ability to generate loads of torque with his lower body. Regardless of how far away his target is, Morton does a good job of rotating his hips through the ball and keeping his hips squared to his target. This allows him to deliver a fast and accurate ball to his receiver and allows them to rack up extra yards after the catch. Also, this makes him very dangerous when throwing the ball deep down the field.

Tylan Morton Weaknesses

Consistency

I mentioned earlier that I needed to address this, so here it goes. One of the major reasons why Morton was not successful as a Division I QB, is his lack of consistency. In his final collegiate season at SWOSU, he only had 6 games where he completed more than 55% of his passes. This makes me question how consistent he will be at the professional level. Additionally, there is one game that left me confused when looking at his stats. In his game against Southeastern Oklahoma, he had 5 passing touchdowns which is very impressive. But on the other hand, he had 3 interceptions and only completed 48% of his passes. If Morton wants to make it at the next level, he is going to have to work on his consistency.

Tylan Morton Draft Stock

After watching his film, there are still loads of questions that I have about Morton’s future. But without getting into too much detail, I am going to leave it at this. He will not be successful at the next level unless he works on his consistency. When you watch his film, it is clear that he has the talent to be a professional football player, but it is not enough to make me confident that he will get drafted. So, with that being said, Morton will likely be a UDFA and will sign for a team in the CFL, XFL, or USFL.

Final Thoughts on Tylan Morton Scouting Report

Overall, Morton was a good quarterback at the Division II level. He is incredibly athletic and can punish defense using his arms and his legs. When inside the pocket, Morton is very poised and is not scared to put his body on the line if it means delivering an accurate pass. He also has good throwing mechanics that allow him to generate loads of torque. On short-intermediate throws, this helps him to deliver an accurate ball that allows his receivers to rack up extra yards. But as I mentioned several times in this article, he needs to work on his consistency.
