Ty Fryfogle Draft Profile

Ty Fryfogle is a former 3-star recruit out of George County High School in Lucedale, Missouri. Fryfogle had a very successful junior and senior year for George County. He racked up a total of 2,349 yards, 141 receptions and 21 touchdowns. According to MaxPreps, Fryfogle’s junior year he had a total of 52 receptions for 919 yards and 8 touchdowns. His senior year was even more impressive. He had a total of 89 receptions for 1,430 yards and 13 touchdowns. The fact that he was only a 3-star recruit coming out of high school amazes me because with that efficiency, I expected him to be ranked higher.

Fryfogle wasn’t able to put his talent on display until his third year at Indiana. During that year he had 45 receptions for 604 yards and 3 touchdowns. I know these stats aren’t jaw dropping, but it set the tone for what was to come. During his senior year, not only did he increase his yards per catch drastically, he had back-to-back games with 200+ receiving yards. According to ESPN, the first game was against Michigan St. where he had 11 catches for 200 yards and 2 touchdowns. If you think this is impressive, just wait.

The second game was against Ohio St. who was ranked 3rd in the nation. During this game, he had 7 receptions for 218 yards and 3 touchdowns. After seeing these stats, I am curious to see how he does against Ohio St. on October 23rd. Ohio St.’s secondary is a little shaky at the moment, so I assume they’re nervous.

Strengths:

Route Running

Fryfogle is one of the best route runners in the Big Ten, if not the nation. Although his speed won’t amaze you, he does a fantastic job of juking out the defender. This allows him to get enough separation to make a play. If you were to watch his tape, I highly recommend that you pay attention to this. He also does a fantastic job of finding holes in zone coverage. He really put this on display against Ohio St. during the 2020 season where he racked up a total of 218 yards. With about 5 minutes left in the 3rd quarter, Fryfogle saw the safety in the middle of the field drop down into coverage and snuck behind him for an easy 6 points.

Balance

When Fryfogle has the ball in his hands, he is almost impossible to take down. His strength and balance allow him to land on his feet and keep the play alive after he makes a catch. Against Michigan St. I couldn’t count the amount of times I thought the play would be over. Fryfogle would somehow find a way to break tackles and fight for a few more yards. Having a wide receiver like Fryfogle is any quarterback’s dream. He doesn’t have to be the first option. He can simply be the second or third option and put up numbers that won’t amaze you, but will get the job done.

Quick Feet

As mentioned earlier, he does a great job of using his quick feet to create separation at the snap. This is a vital skill in the NFL as a receiver. If you can create some initial separation, not many corners will be able to close that gap down the field.

Fryfogle also has the ability to stop on a dime when he is running his routes. He does a very good job of pivoting off of one foot and taking off in the other direction. This completely throws the defender off balance. You need to be good at this in the NFL, because some of the corners that he lines up against will punish him if he can’t change directions in the blink of an eye.

Plays Bigger Than Size

Indiana WR

Indiana WR Ty Fryfogle.

Fryfogle’s ability to go up and make a play on the ball is why I am so high on him. Even though Fryfogle has a solid frame at 6’2” 205 lbs, he plays like he is 6’4” 225 lbs. His ability to make a play on any ball that is thrown his direction is what makes him one of the best wide receivers in this 2022 NFL Draft class.

Weaknesses:

Yards After Catch

When watching his tape, I realized that although he does a fantastic job of fighting for a few extra yards, he struggles to turn a small gain into a bi g gain. This is very typical for a wide receiver like Fryfogle. They are focused on getting the yards that they were aiming for
and that is basically it. With this being said, he is showing improvement in this area. Therefore, I think that after a few years in the NFL he will be a lot better at making big plays out of nothing.

Average Athleticism

Fryfogle’s athleticism is not something that stands out when I watch his film. Although his blend of speed and athleticism is impressive, neither one individually will impress you. I’m not saying that this can’t improve when he gets to the NFL, but as of right now he won’t amaze you with his raw athleticism.

Ty Fryfogle Draft Stock

Fryfogle’s draft stock was at an all-time high last season when he was having 200 yard games like it was nothing. As of right now his draft stock has gone down a little bit. His production hasn’t been as good so far this year. If I were to draft Fryfogle, I would be comfortable taking him in the late second round, possibly earlier. I know this may seem high compared to a lot of other sources, but I think that Fryfogle is still very raw. He will end up being a project, but he will develop into a player that makes an impact.

Final Thoughts on Fryfogle

Although he is still a pretty raw prospect, I think that Fryfogle has all the tools needed to be a consistent second option anywhere in the NFL. With that being said, I think that after a few years in the league he could slide up to the number one receiver on most rosters.
