Parker Washington Draft Profile

Parker Washington played high school ball at Fort Bend Travis High School and was rated a 3 star receiver from ESPN and 4 star from the highly reputable 247. After he completed high school, he opted to go to Penn State University. Right away, Parker was productive. His freshman year he played in 9 games, caught 36 balls for 489 yards and reached the end zone 6 times. Most impressively he had a 116 QBR when targeted.

As a sophomore he played in all 13 games. He had 64 catches for 840 yards and 4 touchdowns. Again, he had a superior QBR when targeted of 114.5. As a junior, he played in 10 games where he was consistently productive. He caught 46 balls for 611 yards with 2 tds. His QBR when targeted dipped to a 89.9 when targeted.

Strengths

Slot Ability

Parker Washington is made for the slot due to his thick body and foot speed. He also showcases amazing lateral ability. Washington is fluid at inside route running along with strong acceleration. This kid burns in the seams. In 2020 he graded out as a 94.2 in the slot. That was higher than David Bell (92.5) and Jaxon Smith-Njigba (92.4) .  If you want to look at the prototype of a slot receiver, watch the Ohio State vs Penn State game this last season and while doing so focus on #3 .

Yards After Catch

Parker has the ability to be very slippery when he possesses the ball. His thick frame and quick feet allow him to catch a short yardage pass in traffic and somehow turn it into a 8 or 10 yard gain. He shows the ability to follow his blockers on a screen pass. Washington is very elusive while in traffic. You can see this at the 11.20 mark of the second quarter against Ohio State this year. He catches the screen pass, bounces off the corner, and takes it 55 yards to the house.

Soft hands

While at Penn State University, Parker had a 94.8 catch rate. He only dropped eight balls in 3 years of action. Whether over thrown or under thrown, Parker adjusts his body and makes the play. A good example of his hands is in the Ohio State game. Eight minutes left in the second quarter, right after the previous drive where he took it 55 yards to the house, he runs a simple option route and chose to break outside instead of in. Clifford throws a horrible off target ball which results in Parker adjusting his body and making a diving catch for 12 yards. It’s plays like this that he makes look so simple and easy.

Route Running

Washington covers all levels of the field. He is very familiar with the route tree. From screens to fades, hitches to outs, he can do it all. His quick feet allow him to get off the line when pressed. He also shows the natural ability to find windows in soft coverage. Parker showcases this against Northwestern at the 1:30 mark in the 3rd quarter. He lines up as the Z. Washington is not pressed, so his quick feet zoom off the line. He shakes off the linebacker, gaining separation while torching the zone by finding the huge window on the deep corner route burning right past the safety in coverage. If it’s a better thrown ball, it’s a house call.

Ball skills

For this strength, all I have to say is look up his catch against Minnesota at the 12 minute mark in the 3rd quarter. One on one, downfield, Washington gets the ball at it’s highest point. He brings it in for the touchdown. Randy Moss would be proud.

Weaknesses

Size

Unfortunately, Parker’s build usually doesn’t translate well in the NFL. At times, Parker doesn’t help his QB out and stays in traffic instead of finding a window for the ball to be thrown. He has a hard time creating separation, especially against higher end corners. His snaps will be limited because he isn’t overly talented at blocking in the run game. Parker is limited to the slot. He played a total of 12 percent outside of it while at Penn State.

Parker Washington Draft Stock

I have Parker Washington as the 9th best WR prospect in the 2023 NFL Draft. I believe he will be drafted late on day 2 to early day 3. With a strong NFL Combine, I really think he may be able to impress GMs and work his way higher up the board.

Parker Washington Player Comparison

I see glimpses of Seattle Seahawks receiver Tyler Lockett and Jaguar receiver Christian Kirk in Washington.
