Kenny McIntosh Draft Profile

Kenny McIntosh is a former 3-star recruit from Nova Southeastern University School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. According to his 247sports profile, he was the 41st-best player in the state of Florida. He was also the 30th-best running back in the nation in the 2019 recruiting class. According to MaxPreps, McIntosh played 4 seasons for the NSU University Sharks. In the 45 games that he played, he had 450 carries for 4,254 yards and 44 touchdowns. He also had 60 receptions for 941 yards and 8 touchdowns.  While achieving this status, McIntosh received 23 Division I offers. Many of these scholarships were to top programs in the nation. After only visiting Oklahoma, Auburn, and Georgia, he decided to take his talent to Athens and play for the Bulldogs.

Even though McIntosh has been a backup for Georgia for the majority of his career, he got some snaps as a true freshman. According to ESPN, in the 4 games he played, he had 25 carries for 174 yards and 2 touchdowns. During his 2020 season, he played in 8 games where he had 47 carries for 251 yards and 1 touchdown. He also had 22 receptions for 242 yards and 2 touchdowns. Finally, prior to the National Championship game against TCU, McIntosh has 142 carries for 779 yards and 10 touchdowns. He has also racked up 42 receptions for 505 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Strengths

Athleticism

Kenny McIntosh has an amazing blend of size, athleticism, and power. As I mentioned earlier, McIntosh stands at 6’1” and weighs 210 lbs. which makes him bigger than a majority of the rest of the backs in the 2023 NFL Draft. When in the backfield, he shows good patience to let his line execute their blocks. Once he finds a lane, he shows off his burst by quickly accelerating to his top speed. McIntosh is also very light on his feet which allows him to elude defenders in congested areas and in the open field. His quick feet also allow him to change direction on a dime. If he is not able to elude a defender, he will not hesitate to drop his shoulder and fight for a few extra yards.

McIntosh also shows off his athleticism in the passing game. His quickness allows him to quickly stem his route outside of the hashes. When he gets the ball, he does a good job of squaring his hips allowing him to make his way upfield quickly.

Vision

As I briefly mentioned earlier, McIntosh displays good patience when he is in the backfield. By being patient in the backfield, he allows his line to properly execute blocks and open up a lane. When he finds a lane, he shows good awareness of where defenders are around him so he can keep the play alive. If a lane does not open up for him or he is under pressure in the backfield, McIntosh shows that he can get creative. His creativity allows him to escape pressure and gain a few yards even if the play looked like it was going to lead to a loss of yardage.

Power

McIntosh does a good job of using his above-average size and strength to his advantage in congested areas. When he is hit, he does a good job of maintaining his balance and keeping the play alive. If the defender gets ahold of his ankle, he does a good job of using his lower body strength to fight for a few extra yards.

Passing Game

Kenny McIntosh is one of the best versatile running backs in the nation. Throughout his career at Georgia, he has proven to be a reliable safety valve for the QB. When the ball is thrown his way, he does a good job of using his hands to make the catch. This allows him to quickly adjust his body and work on racking up extra yardage. On screen plays, McIntosh does a good job of squaring up his hips, allowing him to get upfield quickly.

Weaknesses

Top Speed

Although McIntosh is a very good back and very athletic, he does not have elite top speed. When watching him on film, I found that when he got to the secondary, he does not possess the top speed to separate from defenders. This really hinders his ability to make big plays when handed off the ball.

Pass Protection

McIntosh has a limited amount of pass protection snaps because he is often a receiver. But in the snaps that I did see, he has shown to be very inconsistent. He has the ability to hold his ground against blitzing DBs, but struggles against defensive linemen. His pad level when blocking can also be inconsistent when blocking in the backfield. When blocking linemen, he is often forced onto his heels due to his pad level being high. If he can work on keeping his center of gravity low and his pads lower, he will be more consistent.

Kenny McIntosh Draft Stock

Although Kenny McIntosh is showing glimpses of being an every down back in the future, he has some developments to make before then. Given the skillset that he currently possesses, I think that McIntosh will likely go in the 3rd or 4th round.

Final Thoughts on Kenny McIntosh

Kenny McIntosh is one of the most dangerous versatile backs in the nation. He has an incredible blend of size, strength, and athleticism. His ability to be light on his feet allows him to elude defenders in both congested areas and in open field. When he is handed the ball in the backfield, he shows good patience to let his line execute their blocks. If he finds a lane, he has a good burst of speed that allows him to quickly reach his top speed. He is also very creative when the play breaks down. This allows him to get back to the line of scrimmage or gain a few yards after getting pressured in the backfield. McIntosh has naturally soft hands that allow him to make catches without using his torso.

In order for McIntosh to be an every down back in the future, he needs to work on improving his top speed. This will allow him to separate from defenders in the secondary and have more home run play potential. He also needs to work on keeping his pad level low in pass protection.
