Jaren Hall Draft Profile

Jaren Hall is a former 3-star recruit from Maple Mountain High School in Spanish Fork, Utah. According to 247sports, he was the 30th-best dual-threat QB in the 2016 recruiting class. He was also the 19th-best player in the state of Utah. While achieving this status, he gained recognition from eight Division I programs. But he only received scholarships from Utah and BYU. Hall committed to play for BYU early on in his high school career. He committed to BYU during his 2014 season. He would then go on to not play for the Cougars until 2018 which would be his freshman season.

During the 2018 season, he played a total of 2 games but did not throw a single pass. Instead, he had 4 rushing attempts for only 4 total yards. In 2019, he got significantly more snaps. He completed 31 passes for 420 yards and a touchdown while also racking up 139 rushing yards and 3 rushing touchdowns. Fast forward to the 2021 season where he truly showed what he was capable of. During this season, he completed 189 completions for 2,583 yards and 20 touchdowns. He also racked up 62 rushes for 307 and 3 touchdowns. Finally, so far this season he has completed 248 passes for 3,171 yards and 31 touchdowns. He has also run the ball 86 times for 346 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Strengths

Poise

When watching Hall on film, his poise and composure when under pressure are really entertaining to watch. As the pocket is collapsing around him, he shows good awareness and athleticism to navigate inside the pocket. While navigating in the pocket, he is able to scan the field and find an open target. If he is forced outside of the pocket, he displays good field vision, decision-making and athleticism to make the best decision on how to move the chains. When a defender is closing in on Hall, he does a good job of making sure he gets an accurate pass off even if that means getting hit in the process.

Decision Making

As I briefly mentioned earlier, Hall is good at staying calm when he is on the field and often makes good decisions. Regardless of where he is on the field, as long as he has the ball in his hands, he shows very good field vision. This allows him to quickly scan the field after the snap and work through his progressions. Some quarterbacks panic if their first option isn’t open, but Hall stays composed and determines the best strategy to move the chains.

Extending Plays

If Hall is not able to get the ball out of his hands while in the pocket, he has shown that he is good at keeping the play alive until he can. When scrambling outside of the pocket, he shows good quickness, lateral agility and balance to elude defenders. This buys his receivers time to get open or he can even tuck the ball and gain yardage himself. I should also note that although he is good at extending plays, he sometimes holds onto the ball for too long. This can often lead to him getting sacked behind the line and even lead to him fumbling the ball.

Mechanics

When watching Hall on film, the first thing that stood out to me was how smooth his mechanics are when throwing the ball. When throwing short-intermediate passes, he has very good release speed which allows him to get the ball off quickly after the snap. While dropping back in the pocket, he does a good job of using his foot speed to his advantage by quickly getting set. By quickly getting set, he can focus on finding an open man before they make a break in their route. He also shows incredible mechanics when he is forced outside of the pocket. Hall shows incredible athleticism by being able to square up his hips and complete passes across his body. This allows him to generate loads of torque with his hips and deliver an accurate pass.

Accuracy

Throughout his career at BYU, Hall has not had a single season where his completion percentage has been lower than 63%. This is primarily due to his ability to know exactly how hard to deliver a pass for short-intermediate gains. On short passes in the middle of the field, he can generate loads of power to fit the ball through tight windows. He can also take some gas off the throw and hit the receiver in stride to maximize yards after the catch. When completing passes outside the hashes, he does a good job of delivering the ball right on the sideline. This allows the receiver to make the catch and ensure that they are in bounds.

Weaknesses

Age

By the time he gets drafted, Hall will be a 25-year-old rookie. Although he has the potential to become a starter early on in his career, he will probably be 27 by the time he is a full-time starter. This will likely scare many teams away from drafting him. Instead, they could draft a younger QB and ensure that he develops properly instead of trying to rush the process with Hall.

Size

Jaren Hall is slightly undersized compared to other quarterback prospects and quarterbacks in the NFL. As I mentioned earlier, Hall stands at 6’1” and weighs 205 lbs. Although this isn’t as small as Kyler Murray or Bryce Young, this below-average size could hinder his longevity in the NFL.

Deep Throws

Before getting a chance in the NFL, Jaren Hall needs to work on his arm strength. Hall has good throwing velocity when making short-intermediate passes. But when making passes deep down the field, he needs to make some improvements. When watching his film, I noticed that he has a tendency to overthrow his receivers. This shows that he has the arm strength needed to make plays down the field, he just lacks the accuracy and touch.

Jaren Hall Draft Stock

Given that this year’s QB class is loaded toward the top of the draft, Hall will likely go toward the middle of the draft. After watching many hours of his film, I would be comfortable taking him in the 3rd round at the earliest. If he can put on a good show at the Senior Bowl and the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine, he could be a late 2nd rounder.

Final Thoughts on Jaren Hall

Jaren Hall is a very smart and fluid athlete at the quarterback position. He shows that he is very athletic both inside and outside the pocket. This is due to his amazing quickness, lateral agility, and balance that allows him to elude defenders and make plays. When he is under pressure he shows good poise and decision-making. This is because he can remain calm when under pressure and make the best play possible. He has also shown that he is not scared to take a hit if it means completing a pass.

When given time in the pocket, he is good at working through his progressions and making the best play possible. Unfortunately for Hall, a big reason why his draft stock isn’t higher is because of his age and below-average size. But overall, I think that he has the talent needed to be successful in the NFL.

Player Comparison

When watching Jaren Hall on film, he reminds me of two players that I am very familiar with. His skillset shows me glimpses of Jalen Hurts as a rookie. Meanwhile, his size reminds me a lot of current XFL quarterback Kaleb Eleby.
